Structured Strongman Training Session Highlights: 27 Jun 2009 - Strongman Vehicle Pull and Powerlifting Club Squats

At Team Iron Behemoths, our aim is to promote the sport of Strongman to the masses. To bring the challenge to everyday people. But, with a good mind for safety. Not every one is going to pull a big truck or a fire engine on thier first attempt. That's an invitation for injury.

All along we have catered to our members by providing them a similar Strongman experience of testing their strength in the various competition events - but with adjustable difficulty levels. They strive to match our intensity and gumption but at a weight that they can safely push themselves with. Step by step, we get them stronger to rise to bigger challenges.

With the Vehicle Pull, it is no different. We have Glen and Ted graduating from light sled pulling,( http://teamironbehemoths-members.blogspot.com/2009/05/structured-strongman-training-session_23.html )
to reeling in an actual vehicle - our mini van!

The Strongman Spotlight is theirs today!

Glen pulls the van, arm over arm ,across 20m. A first time experience for him!

We congratlated him after this feat and asked him how did he feel about his improvement in strength. He sent in this testimonial-

"I've watched some WSM competition videos on the internet, and I thought it was very interesting. I have been very interested in Strength training 3 years ago, I've learnt Powerlifting, olympic lifting, bodybuilding and a bit of gymnastics. I thought there isn't really a community in Singapore that trains Strongman... Until I stumbled upon Team Iron Behemoth's blog on Google. I found out more about the Strongman scene in Singapore, I thought it will be cool to join them for some training. Its something new and interesting. After 6 months of training, I saw significant improvement in Strength. Although I'm in NS, I'd never thought my strength would improve during my 2 years in NS due to all the Army training. I've learnt a lot of tips on Strength training, such as the proper form and techniques for lifting. Many of which I didn't know at all. I think Strongman is a really good sport for those who wants to get stronger, fitter naturally. Through Strongman, the body and mind gets tougher in a much different way unlike in a gym." - Glen Poh Jun Kai, Age 20

Ted matches up to his training partner and good friend.

He wrote in to us too -

"I am glad to be part of Team Iron Behemoths, as I get a chance to improve even further and learn from the bigger guys with much more knowledge as well as experience. Strongman had been a stepping stone for me to "UP" my strength attribute as well as endurance, I found strongman to be a complete balanced sport comparing to weight lifting which just focus more on raw strength. My grip strength has improved alot from tyre flip, farmer's walk, dead lift etc. My past six months in strongman had been a unique experience for me. Thank you for everything! :)" - Ted, 21

Angelina merits a mention too this week - Here she is (wo)manhandling the vehicle!

Oh, they got to push the van back too. Quite the kick!

But something nobody is surprised The Hulk can do!

Powerlifting Club - Squats

Front Squats was the order of the day.

Van sharing a vital tip on using the stretch reflex of the adductors to power the lift. Seen here using the towel to illustrate that point and not for other dubious purposes.

The members get to put their newfound knowledge into practice under our watchful eyes.

We got your back.

Structured Strongman Training Session Highlights: 20 Jun 2009 - Strongman Push Sled and Strongman Supplementary Series - Tug Of War

Something ominous and malicious descended upon the Behemoths’ Lair on 20 June 2009.

The Behemoths present for the session that day were inflicted with a new type of "virus" which is fast acting - indeed symptoms occur almost immediately.

We call it the "Push Sled Wipeout".

Its symptoms include fatigue, exaustion and the tendency to not stand upright after a set.

More severely, you may expect to lose your last meal involuntarily through your mouth, lie down flat for over 15 minutes or even just lose the gumption to continue training for the day.

Insofar as its symptoms may sound nasty, once you recover from this ailment (and everyone does), you can expect tremendous benefits accruing from it.

They include greater work capacity, better conditioning and recovery from training, better cardiovascular health, elevated tolerance for lactic acid buildup, toned arms and STRONGER LEGS!

We shall let the pictures show the aftermath of the Push Sled Sprints wipeout pandemic.

Bryan made speedy recovery though.
As did all of the subjects and all are STRONGER for it!
But what can we say about Push Sled Sprints?

Strong(Wo)man Spotlight

Amazingly, the sole member who wasn’t terribly affected by the "Push Sled Wipeout" was a female.

Angelina Tan, a first tier competitor in the Singapore bodybuilding and fitness fraternity.

She hardly broke a sweat while she did her Push Sled Sprints.

After making several heavy and fast passes, she even managed to break into a big smile for our cameras-a testament to her relative immunity to the nasty Push Sled and superb conditioning!

Congratulations Angelina for making the Strong(wo)man Spotlight yours this week!

Strongman Supplementary Series - Tug Of War

Though the main aim of our training sessions is for our members to get better in the Strongman events and Powerlifting, we also engage in such physical activities as Shot Put,Tug Of War etc, as a useful adjunct.

Having taken part in the 1st Singapore Athletic Association Tug of War Competition last year, we found it to be a most enriching experience because not only did we exchange blows with the best tug of war teams in the land, but we also made new friends from Hong Kong(which sent its national team to participate). Our newer members now relish the chance to compete and we are preparing them for it!

Sam shows how to optimise forearm and grip strength. Yes, Tug Of War kills on that count.

Captain Yosh and his Crew prevailed in that round!

Whether you're coming to give his Yoshinettes a run for their money in Tug of War
or to prove you're immune to Push Sleds Sprints. come knowing you'll be having a fun time getting STRONGER together with us!
Every Saturday Hong Lim Park (Clarke Quay MRT Exit A) 12pm onwards.

The Hulk can tell you it's not a walk in the park.

And the shirt comes off!

Structured Strongman Training Session Highlights: 06 Jun 2009 - Strongman Tyre Flips and Powerlifting Club Bench

Today we inaugurated the latest member of the Behemoth family.

Her name is Abigail and she weighs over 300kg.

Words will not suffice.

Just take a look.

Abigail far surpasses our other female members in terms of sheer size as evidenced in the picture.
Shi Qi in Orange. Abigail in black.

Two members try to tango with her.

They will attest she's hard to get.

Keith vs Abigail.

And Bryan gets it!

Which also means he gets to be in the Strongman Spotlight for today!

Bryan set the training record for the session with 5 continuous flips of Abigail. The man nicknamed the Cyborg is a 1.82m, 97 kg personal trainer who has been only with us for a few months but has managed to prove himself to be amongst the strongest.
Not only did he set the record for the most numbers of flips with the 350kg tire, he also set the best timing of the day in a tire flip medley (using the other two tires).
With more Behemoth Strongman Structured Training Sessions under his belt, we are confident that Bryan will be a force to be reckoned with next year!

Don't worry if you think Abigail is too much to handle (indeed only very few can), we have other tyres to cater to the different fitness levels of our members too.

Spencer with a lower profile one.

Most would prefer a tyre which is less of a Maneater.

First timer, Adi, all the way from Indonesia, attempted and was successful with a 200+ kg one.

ShiQi conquered as well with a little spot from Ben!

Fancy a flip?

Abigail and her sisters await you.

Powerlifting Club - Bench

Bench Press Workshop Day.

A day where everyone shares and contributes their knowledge on the lift.
A day where the weights go down and form goes up so that the weight can go even higher in future!

Besides Strongman Training, we also hold workshops on the Powerlifts (and other gym lifts) regularly to meet the training needs of our valued members. These sessions are lively and interactive unlike your run of the mill workshops whereby information is passed top down. Indeed, our workshops are more akin to a graduate level seminar whereby participants bounce ideas off each other-in this way, a variety of different views are shared.

The result is we grow Stronger together!

Bryan shows the group what his personal training clients pay him for.

Keith pushing up at a backward angle. Which helps!

Kevin with better form after every session we have.

Structured Strongman Training Session Highlights: 30 May 2009 - Strongman Zercher Carry and Powerlifting Club Deadlifts

Now what in the world is a Zercher?
Some type of Unicorn?
Or maybe that's what they call a Zebra in Tolkien's Middle Earth, since Elephants are called Oliphaunts there.
And we all know what a Zephyr is, dont we?

"Huh? Le kong si mi?"

Well if you're clueless on both counts, fret not!

It's Team Iron Behemoths to the rescue!

So, what indeed is a Zercher Squat/ Carry?

The Zercher Squat/Carry was created by Ed Zercher, a famous powerlifter and strongman from the United States, who was a force in the 1930s strength scene there. The tale was that Zercher’s gym at home lacked a squat rack, so he would rack up his barbell on the ground, squat before it, hold it in the bend of his arms and lift the bar with his legs and lower back.

Essentially, it is a combination of the deadlift and squat. The Zercher really hits the entire lower body, back and the core. It is a very good way to improve on your squat and deadlifts and people have been doing it all over the world ever since.

And now, it is Team Iron Behemoth's pleasure to introduce it to you!

The Zercher Carry is its Strongman counterpart done with a yoke or a thick bar and often with more weight than a barbell. Incresingly, more competitions around the world are including it for its test of sheer tenacity. Go Youtube and search "Zercher Carry" you'll see what we mean.

Combating the swinging by increasing their stability. The reward is in getting Stronger.

Our members putting their strength to the test.

So now that you know what are Zerchers and how tricky it might be even for tough guys, come on down for a FREE trial strongman session to see how tough you really are.

Come join us as well if even you're not, and let our structured training sessions make you tougher!

Or come just to catch a zephyr(a gentle breeze) at Hong Lim Park while we put on a show for you.

In the interval between our Strongman Session and Powerlifting Club, Van entertains a little girl with a set on the rings.

Powerlifting Club - Deadlifts

Strongman Spotlight

In Today's Strongman Spotlight, we have Ryan.

Ryan, a school teacher, heard about us and came to us seeking a new physical challenge. In a less than 3 deadlift sessions, here we have him standing over a new Personal Record of 105kg. Kudos to him!
It's never a sad thing to be stronger - Check out the smiles!

The Hulk hosted the clinic on Deadlifts today. Sharing a wealth of knoweledge on his favourite lift.

Keeping the spine in neutral alignment and not cocking the head back when lifting, just might pay off down the road.

Below is a mail we received from first timer Andy, a pre-enlistee, who came for our free trial Session and wrote in the next day.

"I have never did a single deadlift in my life before hence i went to strongman training to learn my form well.. Hmm, i can say i gained a lot of knowledge through sam.. he teached us a lot and it's very useful and beneficial i can say.. seriously for example, deadlift i only know got the conventional way.. but sam teached us a new way 'SUMO' way which is more useful to me.. to some ppl it may seems harder, but i prefer the 'sumo' way.. it can lift much more weights and safer for our back! that is very important. Overall, i like strongman training and it seriously boosts one strength alot.. i can see guys like my size lifting much more heavier weights than me.. then i told sam i am ashamed, but he say NO.. u should instead be motivated by them and push as hard as them also.. i will bear that in mind always.. thx sam! =)"

We've only just begun, Andy. Let's get stronger together!
